History Found in a Tomb

After the Tumbrel folk had given up writing, the Elvish scribe Estënopöeisis took down their history and incised it within the walls of a Tumbrel tomb, located at the site of one of their hill cities. The text itself is in both Tumbrel and Elvish, carved in double columns all along the wall. It can only be read by a special sort of moonlight, as it exists only on the astral plane. The Elvish symbols above the door are those for “Beginning” and “End”; the other symbols are those of six of the seven “noble elements” mentioned in the text. The seventh, the star, is carved on the door, marking it as one of the tombs of the undying, and as a doorway to the other six tombs, and perhaps to other things as well.

In the fourth year after the harvest of the double moon there came amongst the people a prophet preaching great troubles. This man became known to the valley kings as the Wanderer. He possessed great visions and was adept at outshining their Vel and Dal folk. He became known to us as Epi-Mithras.

So it was that he turned the people of the hills, charmed the folk of the rills and dales and came to bring the Valley Kings to his deity, the God of All Light, created and uncreated Ku-mithras-hek.

Then came he to the people and met with our King Para-nesh. The king heard the words of the prophet Epi-mithras. So as the god Ku-mithras-hek has been shown to the folk of the hills, valleys and streams, and even to the men of the plains, yet now he will speak through me to the people of the cities and keeps. Hear this O King.
ALL YOUR WORKS, YOUR CHATTEL AND ARTS ARE BUT DUST BEFORE THE GLORIES THAT COME. THOSE THAT YOU SERVE ARE THE SERPENTS OF THE NIGHT THAT HAVE THE MASKS OF MEN. YET THEIR SPIRITS ARE FOUL AND THE DARKNESS THEY SERVE CONSUMES YOU LIKE A FIRE.

ALL THOSE YOU SEND IN SERVICE, MAN WOMAN, CHILD, KINE, ALL FEALTIES ARE BUT SACRIFICES MADE TO THE ELDER DARK. A LIE THAT WAXES AND KINDLES UPON THIS DARKLING PLAIN.
SO IT IS THAT I SEND TO YOU THAT YOU WILL FOLLOW MY WORD AND LEAVE KU-SET, THAT I WILL SEND UNDYING LIGHT FOR A THOUSAND YEARS TO DRIVE HIS KIND FROM THIS REALM.

These were the words to the King.
And the king was shown certain signs and given a vision of the temples and their familiars, and he retired much shaken by this. Yet even then his heart was not moved.

So the king sought out his advisors, calling the Vel and Dal, and his Kora and Ende to him. After some days he sent an answer to the peole of Epi-Mithras where they had gathered. Here were his words.
I shall not stay in the darkness and aid the sons of night. Nor will I enter the light against them, for I see the ruin of our people in this.
Here it was that Para-Albidar received this, and knowing the passes would not be held against him, he gathered the hosts there with Para-Artax, Para-Flarin, and Para-Chanic. Yet even so that they fell upon Mortoreth and Gahim, so they were broken before the gates of Gahor.

Even so our Kora and Ende felt that we should go to them. And it was true that our king did not wish it and they stayed their hands. Yet even so there came another visit.
In the second year after the relief of Gahor, did Epi-mithras come to us again, yet this time he was not in kind spirits, and the mark of his god was upon him. He spoke from beyond the walls, for the king would not guest him.
TO THE FOLK OF THE HILL FORTS, AND THEIR KIND UPON THE CITIES, KNOW THIS. THEIR CITIES WILL FALL IN THEIR DOZENS, AND THEIR DOORS BROKEN AND THEIR FIELDS RAZED. SALT WILL BE THEIR DOMAIN, WANDERING SHALL BE THEIR HOME. NO MAN SHALL TURN HIS HANDS TOWARD THEM, AND THEIR WORKS, THEIR TEMPLES AND THEIR KIND SHALL BECOME WORDS ON THE LIPS OF ELDERS AFRAID OF THE NIGHT. THAT THEY AS A PEOPLE COULD BECOME A MEMORY WILL HAPPEN UNLESS AMONG YOU THERE WILL BE CHOSEN 7 X 7 WARRIOR-SHAMAN WHO WILL COME TO ME AT GOLAMIRA, THERE TO BECOME ENGRAILED TO OVERTURN THE FONTS OF DARK MAGERY.
So those were his words, and so it was that with much trepidation the 49 were sent to him, each to the 7 noble elements, each never to return.
Now it is that we ken only elvish, as we have become scattered as the foes clash. Our dreadful lords have reviled us for breaking out oaths, and the people of Epi-mithras do not see us. Our fortresses are broken, and of our cities few are left, and soon they will be undone by the foe. This then is our fate, for the words of our king were bitter to Epimithras, and so we would have been driven into the south with the foe, but for our sacrifice of the 49. So the hand of the dread god Ku-mithras-hek was lifted from us. Yet even so now KU-SET has loosed a blight upon us, that we may only conceive and bear as water creatures, handless and friendless, with our days upon the land bearable only if we touch no iron, write no words or bear no violence.

This was too late though for it was our arts that went into closing the fountains of the dark. We sent our best after them and here are their names.
Vel-Kora-Uppi – of the kindred of earth
Vel-Kora-Unwe – of the gathering of air
Dal-Ende-Inwi – in the kin of the waters
Dal-Ende-Urra – at the service of fire
Vel-Kora-Vecna – the penetrator of death’s mysteries
Vel-Kora-Mael – upholder of spirit
Dal-Ende-Ceri – she that bears life in her eyes
Now it is that the fonts should be closed, their paths seen no more, that the dark ones cannot have them against anyone. Door So be it now, as we have been told in visions that someday, far beyond the coming of the comet many times, another age shall be riven. The people hope that this will not happen, and that the serpent folk will not be here in the north to again sing sweet songs to lull men and women. Yet that this may be again, so the engrailments shall wait also, each indestructible, each unliving yet living, caught between the sun and the moon, the life and the death. So it is that the 7 live undying and sealed into their tombs, each closing forever the dreadful promise of a dark spring.
